Mothers Day has been and gone for us in the UK, but it’s fast approaching for those over the pond and you may even have a birthday coming up or just fancy a present for yourself… but what do you give someone that’s really special?
From experience, one of the best feelings in the world is giving someone something really thoughtful and unique. It doesn’t even have to cost much and my perfect example of this was a present I gave to my Mum a couple of years ago. She’s an avid gardener and always has been. She really likes to get her hands dirty and could spend hours tending to her flowers and planting new ones. I remember the look on her face when she realised her engagement ring was gone. She had worn that ring for almost 25 years and rarely ever took it off.
She was devastated and would say she felt like she’d lost a limb. My Mum was positive it was lost whilst gardening so we searched every flower bed, every veggie patch, every planter and every corner she could have dug up. We combed through all of it. My Dad even had bought a metal detector and found nothing more than a few bullets (don’t ask) and other useless artefacts. I had a friend at the time who did that as a hobby and knew what he was doing, so one weekend we had him search for several hours too. He marked everywhere he thought there was something significant and we searched them all. Nothing turned up. After months of disappointment, eventually, we gave up. My Dad had bought her a replacement opal ring but it just wasn’t the same. She would mention it from time to time and I could see how much she missed it. So I decided one year for her birthday, I would give it back to her. Of course, it wouldn’t be the original, but I would find one as close to it as physically possible.
I spent hours, days and weeks searching the web for a ring that matched the one I had in my head. It had a gold band with a dark red, almost black garnet stone in a cluster halo and I wouldn’t be satisfied unless it was identical but finding one was damn near impossible. You wouldn’t think it would be that hard, but they were either too small, too big, the wrong metal, the wrong shape, the wrong colour and I was close to giving up until I stumbled upon my Holy Grail. There it was on eBay (of all places); a near-perfect match to what she used to have on her finger. I had bloody found it! It wasn’t real, I couldn’t afford that, but I was hoping the sentiment was enough to make up for that haha.
When her birthday rolled around I was super excited to give it to her. I wasn’t expecting tears or anything like that, my Mum is not the type to show her emotions but the smile on her face told me everything I needed to know. She loved it. She says she looks down at it now and forgets that it’s not the real thing. It fills the void and comforts her, and I don’t think she’s taken it off since. It makes her smile and THAT is priceless.
I’m so excited to be a part of this campaign. I blog for fun and with the shimmering possibility that someday it might take off and become my full-time job. It remains a pipe dream, but when brands you have been swooning over for quite some time reach out to you because they like what they see and want to collaborate; it makes that dream even more tangible. So when JORD contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I would like to receive a watch of my choice from them to review and keep, my knee-jerk reaction was to scream yes! But, I also wanted to make sure that they were an environmentally friendly company and responsible with their sourcing… since that’s my “thing”.
Wooden watches have been all over my Instagram and I’ve found myself window shopping them for months. So I did a little research and loved what I found out about them. Most of the materials JORD use for their wooden watches comes from furniture remnants. It doesn’t take much for them to create the cases and individual links, so they’re able to make the most of what would otherwise end up being thrown away! The Maple that JORD source is completely sustainable and all of their Koa comes from damaged trees or those that were brought down naturally. So you can be assured that no trees are harmed in the making of your unique watch! I love that, and it made me love their pieces even more.
They have a huge range of men and women’s watches with my personal favourite being the Cora series; hence my choosing one of those. They come in a gorgeous gift box that has a little drawer, complete with extra links if needed and an oil to keep your watch looking at it’s best. Sizing your watch is extremely simple and they have the option to engrave your watch or gift box for that extra special touch.
I cannot begin to tell you how stunning this wooden watch is. The detail is second to none and the skeleton back is like a work of art. It’s so comfortable to wear, lightweight and I’ve been asked about it so many times since I received it.
